On behalf of the Telugu Film Industry, the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce, Hyderabad, expresses its deep shock and profound grief at the sad demise of Sri Shyam Benegal, a Film Director, Parallel Cinema Pioneer, on 23-12-2024 at Mumbai. The Film Chamber conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Sri Shyam Benegal and prays for his soul to rest in peace.
Sri Shyam Benegal was born on 14 December 1934 in Hyderabad, Telangana. Sri Shyam Benegal began his career in advertising before transitioning to filmmaking. His debut film, Ankur, set him apart with its incisive storytelling that explored the caste system and rural
feudalism. He directed 24 feature films and produced over 900 ad films, 3 short films, 6 television series, and 41 documentaries.
He was conferred with many Awards namely (1) “PADMA SHRI” IN 1976 (2) PADMA BHUSHAN in 1991 (3) Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005. ANR National Award in He won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi seven times.
